(Sadly, no video from my bat-spin adventure- just photos with Muttnik.)
I just received my first hand-written letter from my 4 1/2 year old niece, Sidney. I've tried to upload a picture of it - but Vox keeps cutting out on me when I do (argh). So, instead, here's what it said:
"Aunt Len,
You forget the book.
I mizz you.
Love,
Zidney"
Obviously, she has a little work to do on the Js and Ss (give her a break - she's 4 1/2), but otherwise - isn't this the sweetest thing ever? Okay, so maybe I'm biased - but seriously - this makes me miss her like crazy. Good thing I get to see her again in 1 1/2 months. :) I'll get the book then.
If you could do anything you want tomorrow, what would it be?

Go to Hawaii. Oh wait, I am doing that :)
Jen and I headed to Red Rocks last night for one of the Film on the Rocks events: a couple sets by Boulder Acoustic Society, followed by a screening of Shaun of the Dead. Since it's nearly impossible to find a ticket to a concert at Red Rocks for less than $50-$60 after TicketMonster charges, it's pretty cool to be able to go see something at this incredible venue for a mere $12 ($10 in advance at King Sooper's supermarkets).
We packed a picnic: homemade gazpacho, hummus, veggies and fruit, but forgot to bring a blanket, so our arses were a wee bit sore by the end of it- Red Rocks has horribly uncomfortable bleacher-type seating, but you're rarely sitting during a rock show! The music starts at 7, and we arrived around 8. We got to listen to a DJ spin for a bit, and I thought we had missed Boulder Acoustic Society. They did come out for a second set, and it was about what I had expected- pretty good old-timey folk revival kind of stuff. I think they'd sound a lot better in a small club.
We had noticed a few people dressed in full-on zombie costumes wandering through the crowd, which was kinda cool. Then they announced that it was time for the zombie contest. They brought all 15-20 zombies on stage, and had the crowd vote by applauding. We couldn't see them well enough from where we were sitting, but the winner won a 2-day pass to the Monolith Festival. Not bad, eh?
Here's a super high-quality photo- that's a Sylvester cartoon that preceded Shaun, and the lights of Denver in the distance:
I'm generally not much of a photographer, but every now and again I strike gold (at least I think it's gold - if you're an actual photography critic, well, pipe down). This shot was taken Sunday morning at about 6:00 am just as I woke up. It's Matterhorn Peak in the Eastern Sierra. Climbed it later that morning. See below that for the summit shot.
I saw Girlyman in concert last night at Swallow Hill- great stuff. They're a fun folk band, complete with stunning three-part harmonies, baritone guitar, banjo, mandolin, and more. Coincidentally, when I added the Hold Steady song "Girls Like Status" to iTunes tonight, I noticed how many songs I have that start with the word "Girl." So I decided to dedicate a post to these songs. But then I figured, why stop there? Here's a list of all the songs in my iTunes that have the word "Girl" in the title.
This doesn't include the bands Girl Talk and Indigo Girls, or the albums Boys and Girls in America (The Hold Steady), Some Girls (Rolling Stones), Girls Can Tell (Spoon), and Go Girl Crazy! (The Dictators).
Leading the way are the Stones, with 5 songs, followed by The Shins and Ryan Adams (3 each). After the list, I'll post a few of my favorite "Girl" songs.
By far the lamest part of any of the following songs is when Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson are talking at the end of "The Girl is Mine."
PM: Michael, we're not going to fight about this, OK?
MJ: Paul, I think I told you, I'm a lover, not a fighter.
PM: I've heard it all before, Michael. She told me that I'm her forever lover, you know?
Blah blah blah...and the worst part about it? Michael was probably talking about a girl. This is a pretty impressive collection of tunes:
